Mid Hudson Bridge Poughkeepsie New York - The Musical Bridge - Bridge Music - Hudson River 400 year Celebration - Lights

When traveling up the Hudson River nearly 75 miles north of New York City you will find the Mid-Hudson Bridge Spanning across the river Poughkeepsie New York to Highland New York. At 3,000 feet long and with its two large towers, this bridge stands firmly in Hudson River connecting.

From atop both of the towers a Huge American Flag hangs down. Passers by can not help but feel a sense of Patriotism as they pass under these large flags.

The Mid-Hudson Bridge was officially named the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Mid-Hudson Bridge, but that name has yet to catch on as it is still referred to as just the Mid-Hudson Bridge.

This suspension bridge is a wonderful sight for those traveling up the hudson river by boat as well as those traveling by car on Route 9.

Each night the Bridge is lit up by colored LED Lights. These lights are computer programmed to they can set different patterns each night. Sometimes the bridges lights will be set to change colors in a rainbow pattern other days all of the lights will be one color. On holidays and the lights are set to special patterns for that day. Like Red and Green on Christmas, or Red White and Blue for 4th of July. The lights are also programmed for some special occasions. Like when the New York Yankees with the World Series the lights are Blue and White. (We have seen that one a few times)

When ever I would approach the bridge at night I would always wonder what colors it would be that night.

Bridge Music is a public art project by Joseph Bertolozzi, which used sounds created by the bridge to compose a number of truly unique songs. Joseph Bertolozzi used the entire bridge as his instrument transforming the massive bridge into the worlds largest percussion instrument.

Using his laptop, some microphones and assortment of hammers he captured the various sounds from the bridge. With a little help from some employees of the New Your State Bridge Authority he was able to get sounds from normally unreachable parts of the bridge, like the suspension ropes and atop the towers.

Special Contact Microphones also know as Piezo Microphones were used to capture many of the sounds. These contact microphones are used to record vibrations from solid objects.
